The wood species you choose sets the tone for your staircase, cabinetry or built-ins. Here is a quick guide to the woods we use most in Denver homes.
White oak
Strong, durable and timeless, white oak is the most popular choice for modern and transitional homes. Rift-sawn white oak has a straight, linear grain that looks especially clean on cabinets and paneling.
Walnut
Rich chocolate tones and dramatic grain make walnut the choice for statement pieces: floating stair treads, fireplace walls and slat walls.
Alder
Softer and warm, alder is common in Colorado for doors, trim and rustic cabinetry. Knotty alder adds mountain character.
Maple
Hard, smooth and fine-grained, maple is excellent for painted cabinetry and clean, minimal designs.
Paint-grade vs. stain-grade
Painted woodwork can use stable paint-grade materials, while stain-grade work shows every joint and grain pattern, so it requires more precise joinery and careful material selection.
