Answers to the most common questions about custom woodwork, finish carpentry and working with Oliver Pro Woodwork in Denver.
General Questions
What does a finish carpenter do?
A finish carpenter builds and installs the visible woodwork in a home after drywall: interior trim and crown molding, doors, staircases and railings, built-ins, cabinetry, wall paneling and wood ceilings. Oliver Pro Woodwork specializes in this custom finish carpentry for luxury homes in the Denver metro.
What areas do you serve?
We serve the Denver metro area from Castle Rock north, including Denver, Littleton, Highlands Ranch, Cherry Hills Village, Parker, Castle Rock, Castle Pines, Lone Tree, Centennial, Greenwood Village, Englewood, Aurora, Lakewood, Arvada, Golden, Wheat Ridge, Boulder, Westminster and Broomfield.
Do you offer free estimates?
Yes. Estimates are free. Oliver visits your home, talks through your ideas, takes measurements and then prepares a custom proposal for your project.
Are you insured?
Yes. Oliver Pro Woodwork carries general liability insurance.
Do you offer a warranty on your work?
Yes. Our work includes a one-year workmanship warranty. Every project is built to last a lifetime, and if something related to our workmanship needs attention within the first year, we will make it right.
How much does custom carpentry cost?
Every project is custom, so pricing depends on the design, the size, the wood species, the finish and the level of detail. We focus on quality and fair pricing rather than the lowest price. After a free in-home consultation you receive a clear proposal for your specific project.
What types of wood do you work with?
We work with many hardwoods and softwoods, including white oak, rift-sawn oak, walnut, alder, maple, cherry, cedar, pine and reclaimed barnwood, as well as paint-grade materials. The right choice depends on the look, the finish and where the woodwork will be used.
Do you work with builders and interior designers?
Yes. With more than 20 years of experience in custom work, Oliver partners on custom finish carpentry with Denver-area custom home builders, remodelers and interior designers, in addition to working directly with homeowners.
How long have you been in business?
Oliver has worked in carpentry for more than 26 years, including 20+ years of experience in high-end custom work.
Do you do commercial carpentry?
Yes. In addition to luxury homes, Oliver builds commercial woodwork such as custom bars and bar tops, restaurant millwork, reception desks and wood wall paneling for businesses across the Denver metro, working with owners and general contractors.

Custom Staircases & Railings
Do you build floating staircases in Denver?
Yes. Oliver builds and installs floating (open-riser) staircases with solid-wood treads in walnut, white oak and other hardwoods throughout the Denver metro. The steel support structure is typically provided by the builder or a fabricator, and we handle the wood treads, fitting and finish carpentry.
Can you replace carpeted stairs with hardwood treads?
Yes. A stair remodel that swaps carpet for solid-wood treads and painted or stained risers is one of the most impactful upgrades in a home. We can also replace balusters and handrails at the same time.
Can you build a curved staircase handrail?
Yes. Curved handrails are laminated and shaped by hand to follow the stair's exact radius. It is detailed, time-intensive work and one of Oliver's specialties.
Do you work with custom home builders on staircases?
Yes. Much of Oliver's work over the last 20 years has been custom staircases and finish carpentry for Denver-area custom home builders and interior designers.
Wood Ceilings & Beams
Can a coffered ceiling be added to an existing home?
In most cases, yes. Coffered ceilings are usually built from framing and finish materials attached to the existing ceiling, so they can be added during a remodel. Ceiling height and lighting locations are reviewed during the in-home consultation.
What is the difference between a coffered ceiling and a beamed ceiling?
A coffered ceiling uses intersecting beams to create a grid of recessed panels. A beamed ceiling uses beams running in one direction. Both can be painted or stained.
Do you install real wood beams or faux beams?
Both. Box beams built from hardwood boards are lighter and easier to install, while solid timbers offer an authentic look. The right choice depends on the design, the structure and the look you want.
Can you install a wood ceiling on a vaulted ceiling?
Yes. Tongue-and-groove and plank ceilings work beautifully on vaulted and cathedral ceilings and are a specialty in Colorado mountain-modern homes.
Custom Built-Ins
What rooms are best for custom built-ins?
Home offices, living rooms, libraries, mudrooms, bedrooms, primary closets and stairway landings are the most common. Any wall with unused space can become functional storage.
Are built-ins built on site or in a shop?
Oliver works on site at your home, where every piece is fitted and scribed to the real walls and floors. That on-site fitting is what makes built-ins look seamless.
Can built-ins match my existing trim and cabinets?
Yes. Moldings, door styles and finishes can be matched so new built-ins blend with your existing millwork.
Do built-ins add value to a home?
Well-designed built-ins add function and a custom, finished look that buyers notice, especially in home offices, mudrooms and living spaces.
Custom Cabinetry
Do you install cabinets supplied by another company?
Yes. Oliver regularly installs cabinetry supplied by cabinet makers, builders and designers, including the crown, panels and finish details that complete the job.
Can you add crown molding to my existing kitchen cabinets?
Yes. Adding stacked crown, light rail or extending uppers to the ceiling is a popular way to make an existing kitchen feel custom.
Do you build custom range hoods?
Yes. We build custom wood range hood covers in a variety of shapes, sized to your hood insert and ready for paint or stain.
How long does a cabinet installation take?
It depends on the size of the kitchen and the level of detail. A timeline is provided after the in-home consultation, once the cabinets and scope are reviewed.
Custom Closets
What is the difference between a custom closet and a closet system?
Pre-made closet systems come in fixed sizes. A custom closet is designed and built for your exact room, so every wall, corner and ceiling height is used.
Can you build a closet with a hidden door?
Yes. Paneled walls with hidden doors are a signature luxury detail and can conceal closets, storage or even a safe room.
Do you build closets in new homes and remodels?
Both. We build closets for custom home builders during construction and for homeowners remodeling existing primary suites.
Accent Walls & Wall Paneling
What is the most popular accent wall right now?
Vertical wood slat walls in walnut or white oak are among the most requested modern accent walls, especially around fireplaces and TVs. Reclaimed barnwood remains popular for a rustic Colorado look.
Is wainscoting still in style?
Yes. Picture-frame and flat-panel wainscoting are timeless details, especially in dining rooms, stairways and entryways of traditional and transitional homes.
Can you install wainscoting along a staircase?
Yes. Stairway wainscoting follows the angle of the stair, including curved walls, and is one of the most detailed paneling projects we build.
Fireplace Surrounds & Mantels
Can wood be used around a fireplace?
Yes, as long as the required clearances from the firebox are respected. Your fireplace manufacturer's specifications determine how close wood can be, and we build the surround around those requirements.
Can you add a TV above a wood fireplace surround?
Yes. We plan openings and blocking for the TV and media connections during the design so everything is hidden and clean.
Do you install reclaimed wood mantels?
Yes. Reclaimed beam mantels are cut, sized and mounted to your stone or tile surround for a warm, rustic focal point.
Interior Trim & Doors
What is finish carpentry?
Finish carpentry is the detailed woodwork installed after drywall: trim, molding, doors, stairs, cabinetry and built-ins. It is the visible craftsmanship that defines how finished a home feels.
Do you install stain-grade trim?
Yes. Stain-grade trim in alder, oak and other hardwoods requires tighter joinery than paint-grade work because every joint shows. It is a specialty of experienced finish carpenters.
Can you install a barn door in my home?
Yes. We size the door to the opening, mount the track securely to framing and adjust the hardware for smooth, quiet operation.
Commercial Carpentry
Do you do commercial carpentry in Denver?
Yes. Oliver Pro Woodwork builds commercial woodwork in Denver and across the metro, including custom bars and bar tops, restaurant millwork, reception desks and wood wall paneling.
Can you build a custom bar top for a restaurant or brewery?
Yes. We build solid-wood bar tops in oak, walnut and other hardwoods, including waterfall ends and long mitered runs, finished for heavy commercial use.
Do you work with general contractors on commercial projects?
Yes. Oliver works with general contractors, designers and business owners and coordinates the finish carpentry around the project schedule.
